Aira Villegas clinched the bronze medal in the women’s 50 kg boxing category at the 2024 Paris Olympics after bowing to Turkey’s Buse Naz Cakiroglu in the semifinals on August 7.
Cakiroglu won unanimously with scores of 30-26, 30-26, 30-27, 30-27, and 30-27 across all five scorecards. She advances to the final against China’s Wu Yu.
Despite competing in her first Olympics, Aira became the second Filipino female boxer to win an Olympic medal, following Nesthy Petecio. She has also secured the country’s third medal from the Paris Olympics, adding to Carlos Yulo’s two gold medals.
