The Roscommon area in the northern Lower Peninsula is well-know for its outdoor recreation opportunities at Houghton Lake, North Higgins Lake State Park, South Higgins Lake State Park, and more. It is also home to the Roscommon Zoo, a 20 acre complex that is perfect for families. With a mix of traditional petting zoo animals and exotic animals, this zoo is a great stop for a morning or afternoon of fun. We recently had the chance to visit for the first time as we headed north in August, and today we will share some pictures from our visit.
This family-owned zoo offers visitors the chance to purchase feed for some of its animals, and this could be why some of the cows, horses, and goats seemed just as excited to see us as we are to see them. Goats, sheep, and llamas are also located near the front of the zoo and they will be more than happy to grab a carrot from your hand.
You will stroll past emus, cavys, peacocks, and more as you continue on through the zoo’s well-maintained grounds. There is a small shop in the middle of the zoo that offers a chance for an ice cream break, before you head out to see the tortoises and monkeys.
We loved seeing the lemurs and the fennec fox, and the monkeys were full of energy and excited to see people.
The big animals are located in the back part of the zoo and include a tiger, lion, and some bears. Due to the hot weather the day we visited, they weren’t very active but were still easy to see. There’s also some camels and antelope back here that will be excited if you still have some carrots left!
This was a great stop to make with the kids. They loved feeding the animals, and we were all glad to not have to do a ton of walking to see everything in the zoo. You can find the Roscommon Zoo at 6327 N. M-18, just east of downtown Roscommon. Stay up to date on current hours by checking out the zoo’s Facebook page. Below are a few more photos from our visit:
