The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) expressed concern over the involvement of John Amores in a shooting incident in Laguna.

On its website, the organization said it was “saddened” by the “unfortunate incident.” However, the PBA clarified that they cannot comment on it, stating it is a matter of the subject of investigation by the police.

“‘This is a matter subject of investigation by the police, and we cannot comment on it. But we are saddened by such an unfortunate incident,’ says PBA Commissioner Willie Marcial,” it noted. “John Amores just signed a one-year deal with NorthPort, the team which drafted him 51st overall in the 2023 draft.”

Amores and his brother reportedly got into a heated argument after a disagreement about officiating while playing basketball in Brgy. Salac, Lumban, Laguna, which escalated into a shooting incident.

CCTV footage from the Lumban Municipal Police shows the PBA player riding a motorcycle with his brother in Brgy. Maytalang. Amores then gets off the motorcycle, shoots the victim, and flees the scene. The victim was unharmed and there were no casualties.

According to reports, Amores threw away the gun he used and voluntarily surrendered alongside his brother due to “threats” and fear for their safety. They face complaints of attempted murder and will undergo inquest proceedings today, September 26.

Amores, a former Jose Rizal University player, was banned from the National Collegiate Athletics Association in 2022 after punching four players from De La Salle-College of St. Benilde during a game. He joined the PBA in 2023 and was drafted by NorthPort Batang Pier as the 51st overall pick.
