There are plenty of different romantic series out there but we can attest that What Comes After Love is definitely different. Now streaming on Viu, What Comes After Love is based on a novel co-written by Korean and Japanese authors (Gong Ji-yeong and Hitonari Tsuji) who perfectly blend Japanese culture and Korean culture into one piece of work. The series tackles the difficulties that come with intercultural relationships.
Due to the emotional weight of the drama, the actors share that preparing for What Comes After Love was quite difficult. Lee Se-young shares that she had to be extra careful because she was using a new language. “I thought a lot about how to communicate with my co-stars,” she adds, but since they filmed in another country, this helped her relate to how her character felt.
Kentaro Sakaguchi, on the other hand, admits that he was prepared for the difficulties involved since he was already aware of the language barrier aspect of the series. Fortunately, the script really helped direct their communication. As for building his character, Kentaro shares that he didn’t really do anything special since the things that he felt while facing his co-stars were most important to him.
For Hong Jong-hyun, it was important for him to start in a state that he already understood so he really tried his best to understand his character going in. “When you watch the drama, you will see all of the decisions my character has to make,” he points out, “and that’s what I put the most effort into.”
Anne Nakamura shares that her character’s relationship wasn’t actually written in the story, so she had to imagine that part. “This made Kanna’s desire to get Jungo back the core part of her character,” she explains. “I also tried to act without losing the side of Kanna that was full of confidence.” Apparently, her outfits and makeup help with that a lot as well.
What Comes After Love is a unique and interesting series that will help you explore different cultures and understand why intercultural relationships can be difficult. It will also teach you a lot about love, heartbreak, and relationships. We highly recommend watching it.
