Business class is more than a bigger seat

You know the walk. You board, glance left at people already sipping champagne in seats that turn into beds, then turn right and shuffle towards row 30. By the time you find your seat, you’ve decided they’re all CEOs, influencers or people who “accidentally” got upgraded.

Plot twist: a lot of them just found a good business class fare. And the flat bed is only half the story. Airlines hide some seriously good business class perks in the fine print: free hotel nights, a tiny Dutch house full of gin, pyjamas you get to keep and a bar at 40,000 feet.

We went digging so you don’t have to. Here are the best business class perks on the airlines South Africans actually fly, plus the small print you need to know before you book.

Is business class worth it?

On a long-haul overnight flight, it’s hard to argue with. Business class usually bundles in the things you’d otherwise pay for separately, like extra checked bags, seat selection, lounge access and a proper meal. Sleep flat and you land ready to go, instead of losing day one of your trip to jet lag. And it’s worth checking our business class flights every time, because sometimes the fare is closer to economy than you’d expect.

The business class perks nobody tells you about

Every airline promises flat beds and fancy food. These are the extras that don’t make the headline.

1. Turkish Airlines: two free nights in a 5-star hotel

Yes, really. With the Istanbul stopover programme, business class passengers can get 2 nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel. That’s a bonus city break built into your flight. Before you leave Istanbul, hit the flagship business lounge, famous for a food spread that could feed a small wedding.

• Also on board: Flying chefs, porcelain tableware and lie-flat beds up to 193cm long.
• Small print: The stopover has its own T&Cs, including booking and routing rules. Seat features vary by aircraft.

2. KLM: a tiny Dutch house full of gin

On intercontinental flights, every KLM business class passenger gets a collectible Delft Blue miniature house filled with Bols genever. Some travellers have been collecting them for decades. Johannesburg to Amsterdam is about 11 hours, with a full-flat bed and dinner by Dutch top chefs.

• Also on board: Wireless phone charging pads, a 16 to 18-inch screen, and KLM Crown Lounges when you arrive or connect in Amsterdam.
• Small print: Direct aisle access and sliding doors depend on the aircraft. Wi-Fi is available to buy.

3. Qantas: pyjamas you get to keep

On long-haul flights to Sydney and Perth, Qantas hands out complimentary pyjamas, plus the new R.M.Williams Inflight Essentials kits. Change, lie flat on a bed up to 203cm long, and wake up somewhere near Australia.

• Also on board: Direct aisle access in a 1-2-1 layout and a 16-inch HD screen.
• Baggage: 40kg checked and 14kg carry-on, subject to bag size rules and other conditions.
• Small print: Johannesburg to Sydney is scheduled on the A380 and Johannesburg to Perth on the A330. Aircraft can change, and Wi-Fi is on selected aircraft only.

4. British Airways: a shower at Heathrow before your day starts

Flying overnight to London? Land, head to the Arrivals Lounge in Terminal 5 (Level 1), and freshen up before your first meeting or museum. Onboard, the Club World Goodnight Service on flights after 21:00 lets you skip the long dinner and go straight to sleep.

• Also on board: A fully flat bed with a mattress topper and duvet. On selected aircraft, the Club Suite has its own door. Afternoon Tea is served on selected flights.
• Baggage: Two checked bags of up to 32kg each (allowances).
• Small print: The Club Suite isn’t on every aircraft. Some aircraft need an in-flight power adaptor, so pack one.

5. Emirates: a bar at 40,000 feet

On Emirates A380 flights, you can leave your seat and stretch your legs at the onboard lounge. On the ground, Chauffeur-drive can take you to and from the airport in selected cities.

• Also on board: Up to 6,500 channels of entertainment, a personal minibar on the A350, and meal pre-ordering on selected routes.
• Baggage: Two checked bags of up to 32kg each on flights from Africa (baggage rules).
• Small print: The onboard lounge is on the A380 only. Chauffeur-drive isn’t available with Skywards reward tickets or upgrades, so check eligibility for your fare and city.

Saving tip: Emirates Business Special. Emirates sells a cheaper business class fare called Business Special. You still get the business class seat, food and service onboard, but you give up some of the ground perks: no lounge access, no Chauffeur-drive and no free advance seat selection (you choose your seat once check-in opens). Change and cancellation fees are also higher, and you earn fewer Skywards Miles. Emirates Skywards Gold and Platinum members may still get lounge access through their status. Business Special is only offered on some routes and dates, so if you care more about the flat bed than the lounge, look out for it when you search business class flights.

6. Qatar Airways: dinner whenever you want it

Qatar Airways was named World’s Best Business Class at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2026 (for the 13th time), plus World’s Best Business Class Lounge and World’s Best Onboard Wi-Fi. The underrated perk is Dine Anytime: order from the à la carte menu whenever you’re hungry, not when the trolley arrives.

• Also on board: Qsuite, a business class seat with doors, and the Al Mourjan Lounge in Doha.
• Small print: Qsuite is only on select routes, so check when you book. Wi-Fi is on the A380, A350, B787 and select B777s.

7. Air Mauritius: free Wi-Fi and rum cocktails

The holiday starts before you land. Air Mauritius serves signature cocktails made with local Mauritian rum, and Wi-Fi is free on the A350 and A330neo. Couples can book a paired “honeymoon” seat.

• Also on board: Full-flat beds, designer amenity kits (such as Porsche Design) and Mauritian-inspired meals.
• Baggage: Two checked bags of up to 32kg each, plus two 7kg hand luggage pieces.
• Small print: Some regional routes limit checked weight to 30kg. Lounge access is at partner or airport lounges.

8. SAA: kerbside check-in and a local cheese board

At O.R. Tambo, SAA business class passengers can use kerbside check-in, and there’s an arrivals lounge when you land. Onboard, expect a proudly South African cheese board and wine list.

• Also on board: A fully flat 180-degree bed on select long-haul flights.
• Baggage: Two checked bags of up to 32kg each, priority tagged and set aside for you in the baggage hall.
• Small print: Flat beds are on select long-haul flights only. Lounge access is for eligible customers, and route exceptions may apply to baggage.

9. Airlink: an extra 15kg for your golf clubs

Short-haul business class has a secret weapon: baggage. Airlink gives you 30kg checked plus an extra 15kg for sporting equipment. Solo? Book the single seat on the 1-2 layout and enjoy no neighbour.

• Also on board: A premium cold meal with complimentary drinks, plus lounge access on domestic routes from Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban.
• Flexibility: Business fares allow changes without a change fee. A fare difference may still apply.
• Small print: Seats are wider recliners, not flat beds. On regional routes, lounge access is at O.R. Tambo.

How to find cheap business class flights

1. Search business class every time. Switch the cabin to Business on Travelstart. Sometimes the gap to economy is smaller than you’d expect, especially once you add bags and seats to an economy fare.

3. Consider one stop. A connection via Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or Amsterdam is often cheaper than flying non-stop, and you get a lounge on the way.
4. Watch for sales. Airlines regularly discount premium cabins. Here’s how to spot a real flight sale.
5. Book business one way only. Fly business on the overnight leg and economy on the daytime return.
6. Factor in the extras. Lounge meals, 64kg of baggage, fast-track and (with Turkish) two hotel nights all add real value to the price.

The small print: what’s not always included

We’ve flagged each airline’s small print above, but a few rules apply to every business class ticket. Before you book, keep these in mind:

• Lounge access is not guaranteed. It depends on the airline, the airport, your route and your fare type. Some airlines don’t offer lounge access with certain business fares, and some airports have no lounge (or only a partner lounge) for that airline. Check your fare rules before you fly.
• Codeshare flights follow the operating airline. If your flight is sold by one airline but flown by another, you get the operating airline’s seat, meals, baggage and lounge rules.
• Seats and features vary by aircraft. Lie-flat beds, suites with doors (like Qsuite and Club Suite), Wi-Fi and onboard bars are only on certain aircraft and routes. Airlines can also swap aircraft at short notice.
• Domestic and regional business class is different. Expect a larger recliner seat rather than a flat bed, and a lighter meal.
• Baggage allowances depend on your ticket. Route, fare, ticket date and frequent flyer status can all change the allowance. Check the baggage rules on your booking.
• Flexibility isn’t free everywhere. Even with no change fee, you may pay the fare difference. Cancellation and refund rules differ by fare.
• Extras have their own rules. Services like the Turkish Airlines stopover, Emirates Chauffeur-drive and BA’s AirPortr have separate eligibility and booking conditions, and some are paid add-ons.
• Perks can change. Airlines update their products often. Details in this article were correct at the time of writing, but always confirm on the airline’s website or your booking.

Is business class worth the money? Often more than you’d think. Once you add a second bag, seat selection, lounge access and airport food to an economy fare, the gap can shrink a lot. On a long-haul overnight flight, a flat bed also means you don’t lose the first day of your trip to jet lag.

Does a business class ticket always include lounge access? No. Lounge access depends on the airline, airport, route and fare type. Some fares and airports don’t include it. Emirates Business Special fares, for example, don’t include lounge access. Check your fare rules before you travel.

How much baggage do you get in business class? It varies. Many international airlines allow two bags of up to 32kg each from South Africa, Qantas allows 40kg, and Airlink allows 30kg. Always check your booking.

Which airline has the best business class? Qatar Airways won World’s Best Business Class at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2026. The best choice for you depends on your route, budget and what matters most, whether that’s a direct flight, a stopover or the biggest bed.

Do all business class seats lie flat? Not always. Most long-haul business class seats are fully flat, but domestic and regional business class (like Airlink) offers a wider recliner seat instead.
