We must admit that until recently, we had never heard of Thermen Berendonck. In fact, when we saw impressions of the hotel on various social media channels a few months ago, we actually thought it was a hotel somewhere abroad. Somewhere in the Middle East.

But nothing could be further from the truth. Thermen Berendonck turned out to be located in Wijchen, in the Netherlands. Sometimes what you’re looking for isn’t far away, it’s close by. That only made me more curious about this place and so we decided to pay a visit not long after! It’s safe to say that our visit to Thermen Berendonck was completely influenced by social media.

Location

Thermen Berendonck is beautifully situated on the waterfront of the Berendonck recreation area, between Wijchen and Nijmegen. Here you’ll find a place where relaxation and nature come together.

Imagine waking up with a view of the lake and step straight into the forests and castle trails. De Berendonck recreation area is just a stone’s throw away from the resort. It offers beaches, wooded trails and water fun over 160 hectares. The perfect place for walking, swimming or simply enjoying the fresh Dutch air.

The area surrounding Thermen Berendonck and Wijchen offers a wealth of possibilities. Numerous castles, windmills and historic cycling routes await. But to be honest, once you’ve stepped inside Thermen Berendonck, you don’t want to explore the surrounding area at all. Thermen Berendonck will enchant you and you will want to make the most of your stay and enjoy the wellness and luxury of this resort as much as possible.

Hotel

Thermen Berendonck opened on April 30, 2019. The hotel was added later and opened in mid-2025, so it’s brand new! This hotel is truly incredible. They’ve thought of absolutely everything.

This hotel is absolutely the best addition to the spa and wellness, because who wants to get in the car and drive home after a day of complete relaxation? We certainly don’t! There’s truly nothing better than spending a whole day relaxing in the spa and then returning to your luxurious room to unwind even more. Hotel Thermen Berendonck is a five-star hotel and rightly so!

Overnight stays at Hotel Berendonck always include unlimited access to the wellness facilities. The hotel offers luxury and comfort, all in an oriental atmosphere. You’ll feel, see, and smell it the moment you step inside.

Breakfast is, of course, included as well. An incredibly extensive and delicious breakfast buffet awaits you every morning in the Numa restaurant. To meet their guests, you can eat breakfast in your bathrobe, so you can head straight to the wellness center after breakfast. I have to admit, I found this a bit of a strange sight. It’s a fairly luxurious hotel, after all, and it’s rather odd to see people at the breakfast buffet in their bathrobes and slippers.

Unique experience tunnel

Hotel Thermen Berendonck is located right next to the wellness facilities. You don’t even have to leave the hotel to reach the spa. You can reach it through an atmospheric tunnel. You can walk directly from the hotel to the spa and back. This tunnel is more than practical; it’s an experience in itself.

During the walk, you’ll be immersed in a magical atmosphere, the perfect way to start or end your relaxing day. A beautiful transition between hotel and spa, perfectly in keeping with the enchanting ambiance of your stay.

Rooms

The hotel offers more than 100 enchanting rooms and suites. Each room and suite offers space for relaxation, rest, and dreaming. You can choose from Deluxe Rooms, Junior Suites, Suites, Majestic Suites, and the famous Maharadja Suite. We were given a beautiful Junior Suite during our stay.

The Junior Suites offer that little bit extra in space and luxury. They include a private balcony, with a stunning view of the lake in our case. They also have a coffee corner and a cozy lounge with a television. The cozy lounge and bed area are separated by a fireplace, so nice!

The bathroom is enormous, with its own jacuzzi. The room exudes luxury. It’s like the kind of hotel room you’ll never want to leave.

Hotel Bar

As soon as you step inside the hotel, you’ll immediately see the hotel bar on your left. It’s a truly inviting place where you’ll want to order a delicious drink. During our stay, we ended our wonderful days here every evening with a delicious drink.

And I speak from experience when I say they make really delicious cocktails here!

Wine gallery

Did you know that Hotel Thermen Berendonck has its own Wine Gallery? If you dine at one of the restaurants during your stay, you can choose a delicious wine to accompany your meal. You can also enjoy these special wines at home. After your stay, choose your favorite bottle and take it home with you. A unique addition to your luxury experience at our hotel.

Fine dining Restaurant Sapna

Restaurant Sapna is their most luxurious and exclusive restaurant. We did not eat at Restaurant Sapna during our stay.

Restaurant Numa

We got to enjoy the delicious dishes of Restaurant Numa for two evenings. Restaurant Numa is the place where relaxation and taste meet. A relaxed and peaceful setting where the staff is incredibly professional and attentive to each guest.

Here you can choose a culinary journey with three, four, five, or even six courses. No matter how many courses you choose, at Restaurant Numa you’ll experience moments of culinary enchantment.

Pure ingredients and warm Moroccan spices give each dish a unique twist.

From a slow breakfast to start your day in a relaxed way to an evening of dining in the luxury of the Arabian Nights. Restaurant Numa it is!

Wellness

The wellness resort is a world of its own. Even before the hotel itself, this wellness center was already there. People come from all over the Netherlands to relax for a day and do absolutely nothing.

What can you find here? Well, everything you can think of. Saunas, tons of saunas, baths, relaxation areas, beautiful gardens, restaurants, and much more. They offer a wide variety of saunas here. I’ve become a huge sauna fan in recent years, so believe me, I’ve tried every one at Berendonck.

My favorites saunas? Easy: the Panoramic sauna, the Pitta Sauna, and the Sauna Theater with its infusions. The indoor and outdoor pools are connected, so you can easily swim from the inside to the outside or vice versa.

Our favorite pool is the Adalaj Stepwell saltwater pool, pure Eastern bliss.

A few interesting facts you probably didn’t know, but which will make your next visit even more special.

• Ninety percent of all the decorations at Thermen Berendonck come from India or Marrakech.
• The entrance to the spa from the reception is a very old Indian city gate from the city of Jaipur.
• They had 26 shipping containers shipped from India. Everything for that authentic oriental atmosphere.

Thermen Berendonck is the most sustainable and innovative wellness resort in Europe. They have over 600 solar panels on their roof, reuse wastewater heat, have their own heat source, and don’t use gas. And this last point is very unique in the sauna world!

Hotel Thermen Berendonck is undoubtedly one of the most unique and luxurious hotels in the Netherlands, especially thanks to the adjacent spa and wellness center. You can easily escape here for a weekend and feel like you’re abroad. You’ll return home completely relaxed and refreshed.
