Isn’t it the best thing there is? Searching for that one unique accommodation in the city. That hotel that is just a little bit different from all the others and where you walk around in amazement again and again and you actually don’t want to leave at all.
This is exactly what we recently found in Amsterdam, at the Bunk Hotel to be precise.
This blog was written by travel writer and Traveltomtom team member Ashley. She was invited to stay at the Bunk Hotel in Amsterdam on behalf of Traveltomtom, and wrote this blog about her experiences.
Location
Bunk Hotel Amsterdam is located in Amsterdam North. We honestly think it is a perfect location. Actually wonderfully quiet. But at the same time you can also be in the busy center of Amsterdam within fifteen minutes. If you travel to Bunk Amsterdam by car you can simply park at the hotel.
If you travel by public transport then there is a big chance that you want to go from the center to Noord. You can take the free ferry behind the station. It goes every 4-5 minutes and takes you to Noord. From there it is a short 10 minute walk to the hotel. Bunk’s location in Amsterdam Noord offers the best of everything, a wonderfully quiet location to relax, but also very close to the city center, which you can reach within fifteen minutes.
Bunk Amsterdam
Bunk Hotel Amsterdam is located in a former church. It’s a monumental church that is completely re-designed to meet the standards of the modern travelers and locals. This Roman – Catholic St. Rita church was originally built in 1921. Anne Frank described it in her diary, the church was bombed by Allied forces in 1943, who had actually aimed their bombs at the nearby Fokker factory where the Germans produced their war machines.
After the war the church was rebuilt, with a bigger tower and longer hall. Eventually it lost its religious function. The old church in the heart of Amsterdam-Noord was converted into the artistic BUNK Amsterdam in 2019.
Bunk can be best described as a mix between a hostel, a hotel, a restaurant, a co-working space, an art gallery and a cultural event venue. A home away from home.
Bunk Rooms
The Bunk rooms are compact in size, but their clever design makes them incredibly functional. Sink into the soft yet firm beds or dive into the rain shower in your ensuite bathroom.
You can easily check yourself in with the automatic check-in system, store your personal belongings in a secret safe and control your room temperature with a remote control that does more than just operate the LED TV.
There are different types of Bunk rooms to choose from, compact, basic and epic. We had an Epic Bunk room during our stay. The Epic Rooms are located in the most refined locations in the monumental church. In addition to the features you would expect from all rooms, they each have historical details or special features. From wooden beams to lancet or stained glass windows, each room is completely unique.
Bunk Pods
The Bunk Pods are a great initiative for budget travelers. Cheap sleeping without compromising on your privacy. They have Pods for one person and a double pod for two people. The pods do not have a private bathroom, but you use a shared bathroom.
Bunk Restaurant
The Bunk restaurant is the heart of Bunk. The restaurant is open every day from 7:30 in the morning until late. Inspired by the monumental church, the menu features local, seasonal ingredients prepared in the traditional way: smoked, pickled, marinated and stewed. Fresh produce is at the heart of every dish, which is also prepared straight from the heart. The long, communal tables are set up to create connections.
Breakfast is served in the restaurant, but is not included as standard with your stay. Breakfast is also different from many other hotels. There is no buffet. There is a menu from which you have free choice and everything is freshly prepared in an open kitchen. A real kickstart to your day.
Are you traveling through the Netherlands and does Bunk Amsterdam appeal to you? They have a second hotel in Utrecht, also in an old church.
Bunk hotels is back to basics but in an inspiring and unique environment, which makes that basic feeling disappear.
Bunk Hotels are redefining hospitality in a historic ambiance for an honest price. They offer the right balance between diligence, reliability and social responsibility.
