Hotels located in historic buildings always immediately have an interesting story. This certainly also applies to Hotel Nassau in Breda, as it is located in a beautiful monumental monastery. We recently checked it out on our trip to Breda. Hotel Nassau was our base while checking out the best things to do in Breda. Hotel Nassau opened its doors in 2016, back then being the first five star hotel of the province Brabant. In 2021 guests of hotels.nl rated Hotel Nassau Breda highest, which means this beautiful hotel was the number one hotel in the Netherlands. In 2022 it was voted number one hotel in the North Brabant province and second best hotel of the Netherlands. These are beautiful and special recognitions for a hotel that has only been operating for a few years.

Hotel Nassau is part of the international Marriott hotel group. It’s actually part of the Autograph Collection Hotels by Marriott. Hotels of the Autograph Collection are independent upper-upscale to luxury hotels within the Marriott International portfolio.

Historic monastery

Hotel Nassau is a unique hotel experience on historic catholic soil where people used to live very soberly. This now forms a wonderful contrast to their luxurious services and facilities.

The Nieuwstraat, where Hotel Nassau is located, is one of the oldest streets in Breda. “De Nieuwe Strate” already appears on the oldest maps of Breda, such as the street plan of 1350. This makes Nieuwstraat one of the core streets in historic Breda.

In 1849, the Order of the Franciscan Sisters settled in Huis Assendelft, which they renamed “The Love Institute” (Liefdegesticht). In 1903, the sisters started building a new building on the adjacent site of the former soap factory. They are erecting a Neo-Gothic chapel and the brick extension of the Love Institute here.

In 1934, the Franciscan sisters further expanded their empire with the purchase of Huis Bruheze at number 23. The last expansion took place in 1950, when the sisters also purchased Huis Waelwijk and gave the complex its current basic form.

The sisters broke through all their buildings. This is how they created the impossible labyrinth that still hides behind the closed facade wall. After their departure, in 1992, the complex was used for student housing and small businesses. From 2003 to 2013 the monastery, consisting of five national monuments, was empty. Until the complex was bought by the current owner. The restoration begins and Hotel Nassau Breda was officially born on May 2, 2016.

Location

There is hardly a better location thinkable for a hotel. Hotel Nassau is located in the middle of the bustling center of Burgundian Breda. Literally everything is within walking distance. Shops, restaurants, sights, everything!

The main train station of Breda is located 1km away from the hotel, which is a short 10-15 minute walk. Due to the central location parking your car can be a bit difficult. There are several parking garages in the city center which can be used. The hotel also offers valet parking, but only upon request.

Bar Brasserie Heiligdom

The place where the wines are always cold, where the perfect cocktail is made for you a la minute and where the menu will give you a little stress of choice, welcome to Bar Brasserie Heiligdom.

You can relax in the Nassau salon and Dillenburg salon.

Restaurant

Hotel Nassau currently doesn’t have a restaurant. They are busy developing a new concept and will start renovating the restaurant later this year. The previous restaurant was a fine dining restaurant and the only thing they reveal now is that their new concept will be completely different and they will soon announce it with a bang.

So definitely stay tuned for the best Breda has ever seen.

The breakfast room was being renovated, and therefor Restaurant Liefdegesticht was used for breakfast.

Rooms

The hotel offers 94 one of a kind rooms, including a very special Panoramic Suite on the fifth floor. All their rooms are luxuriously equipped and specially furnished with luxurious beds and bedding, a stylish bathroom and handy amenities such as a fridge and Chromecast.

The details are exceptional. Photos of nuns definitely complete the room, the finishing touch!

The bathroom is equipped with a bath tub.

Fitness Center

The Enforce Breda City Gym is located on the ground floor of the hotel. As a guest you can train for free 24 hours a day, also without an Enforce master trainer.

You can also choose to train for under the expert guidance of an Enforce master trainer. This comes at an additional fee.

Gift shop

Right next to the reception you’ll find a nice gift shop. It sells a wide range of Hotel Nassau branded gifts. The perfect souvenirs to bring back home.

Bike rental

Breda is ideally suited to go out and discover by foot or bicycle. Hotel Nassau offers bike rental for its guests. They offer modern, Hotel Nassau branded bicycles. In our article about the 12 Best Things to do in Breda we also named renting a bike to explore the city and its surroundings. So when staying at Hotel Nassau this is definitely recommended.

Hotel Nassau also provides various cycling routes for a wonderful bike ride in and around Breda. Bike rentals are €15 EUR per bike per day.
