After a fifth place finish in the search for the Best Street Art in 2024, Detroit has once again been named a finalist in the same search this year. The current batch of USA Today/10Best Reader’s Choice polls are all about the arts, as they look for the Best Sculpture Park, Best Small Town Art Scene, Best Art Museum, and more. For the Best City for Street Art contest, 20 finalists have been chosen: “Street art is more than just eye-catching; it speaks to a city’s culture and personality, and it belongs to the entire community in a way few other forms of art can claim.”
Other nominees this year include Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.
Detroit’s paragraph from 10Best reads: “You can take in Motor City’s mural art from the seat of your car. Detroit’s Grand River Creative Corridor stands out as a highlight, with nearly 100 murals between Rosa Parks Boulevard and Warren Avenue. Alternatively, you can ride the Detroit People Mover’s 2.9-mile loop and explore Art in the Stations’ collection of 13 mixed-media displays.”
We recently visited Detroit for a Red Wings game and had the chance to walk around downtown on a quiet Sunday and view some of the large murals. From the Stevie Wonder mural that could be seen from our hotel room window to the large 3D mural on the Murphy Hall of Justice or the controversial Be The Change murals, art was everywhere we looked. There are many online resources to help you find maps to all the art, we recommend starting with the Visit Detroit mural guide.
One of our favorite places for murals in Detroit is Eastern Market. Here you can see all of the murals shown above and also visit a brewery, grab some tacos, purchase fresh produce, or peruse a wide selection of art and handmade jewelry. Walking through the streets and alleys here showcases some amazing and interesting murals that have been added over the years.
You can vote for Detroit as the Best City for Street Art once per day through February 17th. As of this writing, Detroit was in fourth place.
Detroit also has a chance to win the Best Art Museum poll. The Detroit Institute of Arts (currently in second place) has a chance to win this contest for a third consecutive year: “Housed within a Beaux Arts building, the Detroit Institute of Arts maintains a collection of more than 65,000 works — among the largest and most comprehensive in the United States. Visitors can enjoy human creativity from across the globe as they explore more than 100 galleries, including the Center for African American Art, one of the first collections devoted to African American art at a major museum.”
