Michigan State Park Campground Closures for 2025

Just like we saw in 2024, this year will be a busy one for the Michigan DNR as it continues to address a backlog of projects thanks to American Rescue Plan/Building Michigan Together funds. Road improvements, upgraded water, sewer, and electrical, and new toilet and shower buildings are just some of the projects on the schedule for 2025 to help improve the visitor experience at more than 20 Michigan state parks. We’ve highlighted some of the major projects below, and encourage you to stay updated at all times by visiting the Michigan DNR website.

This is not a complete list of all projects, and we left off many of the campgrounds that are still scheduled to be open for the summer camping season after 2024-early 2025 projects are wrapped up. Keep these closures in mind when searching for reservations, and consider checking out a new state park that you haven’t been to before!

Aloha State Park – An unexpected issue has left 16 sites without electrical (they are still available at a discounted rate) and three other sites are closed due to issues with groundwater.

Bewabic State Park – The B and C modern campground loops here, which covers around 100 sites, will be closed this year. Park roads are being repaved and a new toilet and shower building is being constructed.

Brimley State Park – This popular Upper Peninsula campground is slated to open sometime in May (day use area re-opens in June) after new water and storm water systems have been installed.

Cheboygan State Park – Due to delays with last year’s planned work on the restroom and shower building and a construction schedule still not being set, the modern campground at Cheboygan State Park is currently closed to reservations for 2025.

Clear Lake State Park – After work is completed on water distribution, toilet and shower building and sanitation station upgrades the modern campground at Clear Lake State Park is set to re-open in mid-June of 2025.

Harrisville State Park – Four sites at the modern campground here are currently closed due to erosion concerns.

Indian Lake State Park – A shoreline restoration project at the south modern campground here will see eight sites closed for the 2025 camping season.

Ionia State Recreation Area – The modern campground and mini cabins will be closed from May to October in 2025 for the construction of a new toilet and shower building, sanitation station, and drain field, as well as upgrades to the electrical system.

Ludington State Park – Perhaps the most publicized of any state park project in 2024 or 2025, almost all of Ludington State Park (including the campgrounds) is closed until July.

Muskallonge Lake State Park – The campground, day-use area, and boat launch here will be closed from June 16 to October 1 as improvements are made to the parking areas and park road. A new shower and restroom building will also be renovated while the campground is closed.

Otsego Lake State Park – A project that has been pushed back will see the 44 sites at the campground converted to full hook-up when Otsego Lake State Park closes in August. If you’re looking to enjoy a getaway at this beautiful campground near Gaylord, you have a very short window to do so in 2025.

Sleepy Hollow State Park – The modern campground here will be closed from April – October in 2025 for a planned enhancement project to replace the toilet and shower building, pave campground roads and update the beach building.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park – The new viewing platform and accessible walkway isn’t the only big project going on at one of the Upper Peninsula’s most popular parks. The Portage Loop and Hemlock Loop at the Lower Falls modern campground will be closed until mid-summer as water upgrades are completed.

Traverse City State Park – Get your camping in early this year if you’re headed to Traverse City! The modern campground will close in July and remain closed into 2026. Projects include improved camping amenities, enhanced day-use areas and improved vehicular/pedestrian access. The lodge will also be closed and torn down.

Twin Lakes State Park – Construction of a new toilet and shower building and an upgraded sewer system will see the entire campground here closed for the 2025 season.

Young State Park – The Spruce campground is scheduled to re-open in mid-June after drainage issues have been addressed and both toilet and shower buildings have been replaced.

The Michigan State Park system includes 103 state parks, more than 140 campgrounds, and more than 14,000 campsites. Reservations can be made online at midnrreservations.com.
