Rendezvous Brunch Affair at Park Hyatt Johannesburg: A weekend ritual at Room 32

The world’s smallest and most intimate Park Hyatt recently opened in Johannesburg. It is the only Park Hyatt in South Africa and the third one on the entire continent of Africa–the other two are in Zanzibar and Marrakech. Housed in a restored 1930s colonial mansion influenced by Sir Herbert Baker’s architectural legacy, the hotel was previously known as The Winston Hotel. It features 31 guestrooms and suites and embraces South African heritage through curated local artwork, bespoke Ndebele-patterned throws, and interiors celebrating the country’s diverse biospheres.

The restaurant at the Park Hyatt Johannesburg is called “Room 32” because it plays on the fact that the hotel has 31 rooms. Room 32, as the restaurant, represents an additional or special space beyond the 31 guest rooms, creating an intimate dining experience that complements the hotel’s luxury accommodation.

We were invited for brunch at Room 32, their fine dining restaurant. It was a long, leisurely, four-course feast, with live entertainment on their terrace, overlooking the landscaped gardens. The staff were friendly and attentive, and some remembered us from our stay at the hotel three years ago, when it was still The Winston Hotel. We even made some new friends. The food was delicious, the venue beautiful, and the vibe chilled.

Just the reassuring cadence of good food and Johannesburg seen from a quieter, more gracious vantage point.

Pastry Chef Chrizelle Venter approaches dessert with the same clarity. Her patisserie journey is rooted in structure and subtlety; textures that linger, acidity that lifts, and sweetness that never overwhelms. Each plate is composed with intention, from panna cottas that yield gently to chocolate domes that break with quiet drama.

The setting is equally considered. Room 32, housed in a Sir Herbert Baker-designed residence, offers a sense of occasion without excess. Step onto The Terrace and the mood shifts—filtered light, a soft breeze, and live music that hums in the background, never competing, always complementing.

Touted as one of the best brunches in town, this is brunch for those who understand that luxury is not about abundance; it’s about intention, rhythm, and the pleasure of time well spent.
