Michigan’s recreational cannabis industry continues to grow, recently passing California as the top market by sales volume. Since state voters passed a 2018 ballot initiative and recreational sales began in late 2019, things have moved at a fast pace and there are now almost 1,000 dispensaries here in Michigan. For those of us that live in heavier populated areas in the Lower Peninsula, we’ve gotten used to being able to find and visit a dispensary within a 15 minute drive or less. As we headed to the Upper Peninsula this June, we wanted to see what was available north of the Mackinac Bridge for recreational cannabis, and provide a guide for those looking to be able to obtain the same products they’re used to at home while on vacation. There are more than 50 dispensaries in the U.P. and most are in convenient locations near the bigger cities or the major highways.
Visitors from the Lower Peninsula will see some familiar names like Lume and Higher Profile. We tried to focus on visiting unique and local dispensaries whenever possible, like The Fire Station Cannabis Co., Outpost, Northern Light Cannabis, and Glazed and Confused. We were surprised to see how busy the border towns of Menominee, Crystal Falls, Iron Mountain, and Ironwood were, with visitors from Wisconsin driving a good portion of the sales. At each dispensary we visited, staff was friendly and knowledgable, and product offerings were plentiful. Make sure to check out the first-time shopper discounts and loyalty programs at each of these establishments!
Below is a list of the dispensaries in the Upper Peninsula, with addresses, website links, and hours of operation. All efforts have been made to keep the information in this post as accurate as possible, but as is the case with any industry things can change quickly. Despite doing quite a bit of research ahead of time, we found one dispensary had closed, a few had changed names, and a handful of new ones had opened. This is the ultimate Upper Peninsula Cannabis Tour guide.
